Virtual Goods, are they worth it?

Let me start this post off by saying i’m frugal. Well, frugal might be too nice of a word; i’m cheap. To me, the idea of buying “virtual goods” seems a little silly. Granted, I’ve never bought any myself, so I have no real life experience or testimony to offer.
For a class assignment I have to use a prepaid Zynga card. which is for buying content for online games such as Farmville or Cityville. To be honest, hearing that I had to buy a card and play games for this assignment didn’t leave me very enthused. Sorry to anyone who loves these games, they’re just not my forte. Also, I personally don’t see the point in paying out-of-pocket for virtual goods and content when there are free versions available. So what if you can’t get pink tractor? There are other, free, options for harvesting your crops.

Now, if the assignment had be to buy an itunes card, that would leave me enthused. Although in my cheap fashion, I don’t really use the itunes stores very much, preferring the free version of Pandora. However, having to buy music for class is something that you would not hear me complaining about. To me, music, and the other things you can purchase through itunes, is mostly worth paying for.
In the end it comes down to a matter of taste. If you love games and thats the type of entertainment you want to spend money on, then go for it. On the other hand, people could argue that any music on itunes you can find for free. Its just about what you value enough to put a price on.
Who knows, maybe after I sit down and use the virtual goods card I’ll be a reformed Farmville fanatic. But for now, all I can say is that online game content is not something I would willing to spend $10 when instead I could put 10 cans of soup in my cupboard (hey, i’m a broke college girl, remember?).
