Students notice better study habits after giving up Facebook

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. (May 10) -- Jackie Bailey sat down at her desk and turned on her laptop. Once it finished booting, Bailey opened her Internet connection and did what she always does. She checked her Facebook account.
“I probably check my Facebook every time I turn on my computer,” Bailey said. “It’s just a habit.”
Bailey and other St. Bonaventure University students agreed that Facebook, a social networking website, distracts students from schoolwork and studying. Some students said they even decided to forgo Facebook for several weeks during the spring semester.

Students say they feel safer after attending new self-defense class

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. (April 15) -- Instructor Meredith Haggerty walked around the group exercise room in the Richter Center. One by one she blocked punches from each of the 10 students repeating the blowout drill she had just taught them.
“Keep your hands up,” Haggerty said to sophomore Kelley Burke as she practiced punching. After a minute Burke finished. Exhausted, but with a proud smile, Burke continued other exercises as Haggerty moved on to the next student.
The Sandra A. and William L. Richter Center now offers weekly Krav Maga classes on Wednesdays at 5 p.m.

Some students stay in on St. Patrick's Day

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. (Feb. 25)-- Green-clad students filled the pizzeria as sophomore Michelle Mills waited in line at Mangia on West Main Street in Allegany last St. Patrick’s Day. Behind her Mills heard someone shout, “Look guys, I’m doing an Irish jig!” Mills turned around to see her friend frantically hopping around with a big smile on her face, clearly proud of herself.
“My friend was drunk and hopping around like an idiot telling everyone that she was Irish dancing,” Mills said. “Clearly, she wasn’t.”
Stories about drunken students and parties on St. Patrick’s Day are heard all around the St. Bonaventure University campus, but what about the students who choose not to party?

Students call for security cameras in dorms

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. (Feb. 17)-- In the early morning hours of Jan. 18, St. Bonaventure University sophomore Jennifer Stype woke up to pounding on her room door on the fourth floor of Shay Hall.
“It was probably around 3 a.m. and there were these guys knocking on our door. They were asking for a guy named Jamie,” said Stype, a gerontology major. “By the time Kelley looked out the door they were gone.” Kelley is Stype’s roommate.
