Imagine walking down the street headed for the subway when a notice pops up in front of your eyes saying its suspended. Not a billboard or a sign, but a small notice projected onto the lens of your glasses. Freaky, right? That’s only the beginning. Throughout the day, while walking through town or working, notices pop up on your lenses for reminders, the weather, your calendar, new messages, take pictures and all sorts of nifty things. You can set reminders and alarms and answer messages with your voice during your stroll as well. This might seem like a ludicrous, futuristic idea, but how far off is it really?
Well, according to Google, technology like this is right around the corner. Just about a month ago Google premiered its Project Glass: One Day... video and it's already received almost 15 million views.
The video shows a man doing all of these things with his glasses (and i’m assuming phone) throughout his day. As cool as this video and technology is, I have to wonder if I’m the only one who finds it creepy. A pair of glasses that know everything? Where’s the fun in that. To me, the technology advance, which is still most likely at least a couple more years away, would take away the little adventures in life that come with uncertainty.
I guess I must be one of the only people who feels this way though, since Corning Glass has released a similar video, but with all the things technology can do with different kinds of glass. The video shows a promising and interactive future, but to me its too much too soon. I guess i’m nostalgic for the day where you actually had to knock on someone’s door or call their landline.
Another video that captivates the viewer with the wonders of technology is one for some iPhone 5 concepts. In this video, which has over 50 million views since August 2011, the idea is that the phone can project holograms, have a projected laser keyboard. Although this video wasn’t released by Apple, it still shows what emerging technology people expect in the near future.
With all of these innovative ideas coming to life in the near future, I almost feel as if we’re entering a world that is more like a science fiction movie. I might be the only one, but I wish we could just be content and not have the constant need to move forward with technology.
